Why do varicose veins occur?

Why do varicose veins occur?

Veins are basically tubes with little doors in them called valves. These valves stop the blood from back-flowing as there isn't a lot of pressure in a vein. Varicose veins are when the valve has broken somehow and you basically get a pool of blood.
I'm afraid I don't know how they're caused. I know they're not harmful, and if you want you can have surgery to remove them but it'll leave scarring.
