What is the best way to avoid varicose veins?

I work in a nursing station as a health unit coordinator (unit clerk) and I have been noticing that my legs ache in the morning after a 12 hour shift. Any advice

horse nuts wont work sicko. best way is to excercise, trim and firm those legs. wear tight pantyhose while working to constrict skin.

Oh my gosh! My legs would ache after 12 hours too! I'd suggest elevating them as soon as you get home , maybe even use cold compresses to soothe them. As for varicose veins, I'm not sure you can avoid them spending that much time on your feet.
Good luck and don't work too hard!

i heard that at health stores, you can get horse chestnut. that is supposed to work. i'm not sure if wearing a good hose helps either.

About Varicose Veins
A vein is said to be varicose when it is dilated, lengthened and tortuous.
are swollen anVaricose veinsd twisted veins that look blue and are close to the surface of the skin. A vein is said to be varicose when it is dilated, lengthened and tortuous. These twisted, swollen and bulging vessels are commonly found on the insides of the legs between the groin and the ankle and at the back of the calf.

The normal veins are taut, however if the blood flow is too sluggish, the veins slowly get dilated and tortuous in order to accommodate more blood in the lumen. Another possible reason is that the valves in the vein do not function properly and the blood leaks down with gravity and collects in the veins of the legs.

It is believed that up to 15% adults in the western world are affected by this condition.

Varicose veins are more likely to occur in women than in men.

The cause of piles (or hemorrhoids) around the anus is also due to varicosity of veins around the anus.
Causes:
Causes and risk factors for varicose veins include:

Obesity.

Pregnancy.

Tumors.

Weakness, wasting of muscle.

Hormonal changes at menopause.

Activities or hobbies that require standing for a long time.

A family history of varicose veins.

Past vein diseases such as thrombophlebitis (inflammation of a vein before a blood clot forms).
Symptoms:
Leg veins become bigger, blue and twisted. Most people feel severe pain in the area, swelling, and a constant itch. Blood can pool in the veins and the tissues won't get enough blood and nutrients, causing the skin to become thin, hard, dry and discolored. Sitting down with the legs raised is the only way that these problems will be relieved. Bumping can cause severe bleeding and hence contact with the vein should be limited.
Diagnosis:
On physical examination by a
doctor this can be detected. Your doctor can take an X-ray of the vein (venogram) and/or a special ultrasound to tell if there are any problems
Treatment:
The goal of any treatment or care is to improve blood flow back up to the heart. Elevate your
legs while you are sitting and exercise or walk every day.
Medical treatment is not required for most varicose veins unless problems result, such as a deep-vein blood clot or severe bleeding which can be caused by injury to the vein.

Sclerotherapy is used to treat smaller varicose veins. This is a minor procedure where a chemical is injected into the veins and results in the vein becoming scarred. This forces the blood to detour to healthier veins. The doctor might place an elastic stocking around the treated leg to reduce bruising and bleeding. The risks of sclerotherapy are brown spots at the injection site and clots in superficial veins. There may also be a reaction to the injected chemical and new smaller veins may form.

Stripping or vein removal is used to remove larger varicose veins. This is a hospital procedure-requiring anesthesia. Parts of the vein are removed or tied off, or the entire vein can be removed. Swelling may occur and can last 6-8 weeks. The risks of stripping are possible bruising, bleeding or formation of new varicose veins.
