Varicose vein is hot to the touch and sore, could it be a blood clot and how serious? |
My 75 year old mother woke up this morning complaining of a sore spot on her leg that hurts and is hot to the touch. The spot is on/within one of many existing varicose veins on her right calf. I've been searching for symptoms to decide if we should be concerned enough to bring her to the ER or if it can wait until her doctor can see her on Monday but I'm finding conflicting results. Thoughts? Comments? Opinions? Same experience? Treatment at home? A hot sensation and soreness can easily mean some sort of infection, and this could be associated with a clot. Take her to the doctor as soon as you can make an appointment. If the pain gets any worse, call 911 and have her taken to the ER. There is a possiblility of blood clot. If the pain is severe, the leg is swelling, or the leg is dis-colored. Get to the ER. If you are concerned, though, it is best to get it checked out just to be sure. Take her to the hospital especially if it is hot to the touch. It isn't worth chancing her life by waiting until Monday. |
