When or where is violence against women tolerated?

I was reading an account of the brutal repression used against the early women suffrage demonstrators here in America and Britain. These women were ruthlessly beaten and no one cared because these women were not behaving like ladies and therefore did not merit society's protection. Are there any modern day equivalents of this? Or some 21tst century version? Perhaps a non-violent example?

If possible in Western Society...

1. Shows a woman being beaten up by the police for being an 'eco terrorist'

2. Shows the police's attitude to this kind of thing

Ok. It's difficult to back up what I'm about to say because there's a whole culture of silence that surrounds this. Those of us who don't talk about it, those of us too afraid to report it.

Sexual violence against women in Western countries isn't so much "tolerated" as misunderstood or ignored. People question whether the woman "deserved" it (e.g. what did she wear that day, what is her character like, etc.). Law officials aren't always as helpful as they could be.

Any good defense attorney will try to establish that the victim somehow "deserved" the rape. They do this because it works. People often don't care about a woman who actually knew the man who violated her. I know the part about the defense attorneys because it happened to a friend of mine (she was 13 for god's sake) and because I used to date a psychiatrist who had to testify medically at countless rape trials.

Add: I think the thumbs-downs on answers that talk about violence against women in Western cultures speaks for itself.

How does one find an example of non-violent violence?

Look to Eastern Europe (sex trafficking), Southeast Asia (so called "honor killings," disfiguring women who won't follow the rules with acid in her face, little girls burned alive for attending school), Thailand (forced sexual slavery of women) and even the "massage parlors" in Europe and North America, where the women are forced to work as prostitutes to work off their emigration costs.

You don't have to look hard to find it.

Shamefully, violence against women is tolerated in many 3rd and 4th world countries.

Shamefully, domestic violence against men is tolerated in the United States of America. There is no Violence Against Men Act.

It's nearly impossible for a man to have a female violent attacker arrested. As a result, very few men even report being attacked.

Most Arab countries are dangerous to all women and girls. Two weeks ago, a girl reported to the police about her rape case, and they accused her of being immodest! You just don't hear that on the news! Many women are being abused behind closed doors in the Western Society.

In my opinion, violence is only acceptable in the context of self-defence. It should only be used when all else fails.

Studies show that the use of violence as a means of deciplining children often breeds more violence and confusion.

The only possible accepted violence against women in Western society is during absolute self defense...as in you think your life is in danger. As others mentioned though the obvious answer would be third world countries and even some slightly modern countries like China.

Violence against men in the western world is tolerated. I dont know of anywhere that voilence is tolerated against women (in western world).

The lax legal treatment of domestic abuse cases seems like tolerance to me.

Take your blinders off: Everyday in America and for less than a demonstration.

Afghanistan + Taliban = Modern day equivalent.

You should investigate female circumcision, primarily in Africa.
