Is there racism in the feminist movement against non-white women doing anti-violence work? |
What are your thoughts on this? I've never seen or heard of any such thing. Yes, there is what I'd call racism in the attitudes of some western feminists to women's rights campaigners in the muslim world. Western feminism is part of the greater PC movement with it's cultural relativism. It's rare to find a western feminist who will criticise muslim cultures outright for their mistreatment of women. Instead they prefer to put women's rights in a cultural context and claim that non-muslim women don't require the same protection from violence as white women because in some muslim cultures violence against women is culturally acceptable. It's the kind of cultural relativism that can be used to excuse genital mutilation. No the racism is in GWS classes and the white supremacist white females. Here is a copy of a recent question with link for your review. Women from black and minority ethnic groups are doing vital, innovative work in the 'violence against women sphere' There is a very Eurocentric view to Feminism. While White women were whining in the '50s about working outside the home, Black women were probably laughing because they had already been working outside the home for decades! |
