Dog with skin yeast infection? |
How can I get rid of a nasty yeast infection on my dog's hind quarters? It is smelly and has caused her to loose her hair. She really needs relief. Can you help? Our dog had the same thing. We had to go to the vet, he gave our dog some meds and some medicated shampoo. A trip to the vet is in order to provide a proper diagnosis. If it is yeast/fungal infection, either topical treatments (shampoos, ointments, etc.), systemic treatments (ketoconazole), or a combination of both will likely be prescribed. Mix half water with half white vinegar. What this mixture does is it changes the PH balance making the dogs skin undesirable for the yeast to grow. It kills the fungus as well. You must treat the dog everyday until the skin begins to show improvement and the fur starts to grow back. In between sponging her down with the mixture, you may bath your dog once a week in a mild shampoo keeping the coat clean and grease free. Yeast infections leave a dog smelling bad and feeling like it has a greasy coat. Use an anti fungal shampoo if possible. This will work if you persist. Yeast infections are nasty but they are curable. You will also improve the situation by washing her bedding with hot soapy water and bleach. If you want a faster soulution take her to see the vet. Scratching goes hand in hand with yeast infections which can also leave your dogs skin red and raw. If you can't afford a vet then try the vinegar method, but the vet is the fastest way. You should first have the dog examined to determine the skin rash is yeast there are many others out there. Your vet can then prescribe something topical, and oral to help. Usually a flea problem is the culprit. Dogs get bit by fleas and scratch all the time causing bacterial infections like yeast ot staph. Have vet take a look. I wouldn't waste time buying over the counter products. She probably has a serious dermatitis and needs a prescription from the vet. She may have a serious allergy and needs medication or maybe even need a change in her food. I went through this several years ago and it can be very expensive if you do not take care of it in time. My Border Collie had this. It stunk and made his fur fall out. My dog had that too. When I took her to the vet, he gave her some pads that worked really well. I'm not sure what they're called, but ask your vet. He or she will know. Plain yogurt....rub it on her. Rub it on her fur back there and try to get her to stop licking. Take her to the vet. Sounds like she will need medication for it! |
