Toddler Yeast Infection?

My intact toddler son has been been complaining about a sore penis. It is swollen at the base on one side and there is clumpy white discharge coming from the tip on his penis... is this a yeast infection? If so does anyone know of any home remedies until we can get him to the doctor tomorrow? Thanks!

Clumpy discharge sounds like normal smegma?

A yeast rash would have little dots around the rash about the size of the head of a straight pin.

Home remedies include 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water OR 1 part lemon juice to 12 parts water OR unsweetened plain yogurt. Grapefruit seed extract is more effective but you probably don't have it.

smegma

A natural secretion of skin cells and oils that collects under the foreskin in both males and females. If allowed to grow stale, it may have a pungent aroma (commonly compared to cheese [males] or fish [females]), and has lubricant, pheromonal (sexual attractant) and perhaps bacteriostatic (bacteria-killing) functions. The quantity varies, but it is comparable to earwax. (In one survey, three out of 18 self-selected intact men never saw smegma; one saw it after a week unwashed; six after two days; eight after one day; and one after less than a day. Three out of seven circumcised men reported seeing smegma.) (Gk. = soap)

symptoms

it's tricky to tell when men have yeast infections, because they can have a penile yeast infection without having symptoms. when they do have symptoms, it can be really awful; i was once told by an infected man that he "wished it would just fall right off." here are some signs of the dreaded penile yeast infection:

- the most common symptom is irritation and soreness of the head of the penis. apparently it can itch like crazy, too.

- yeah, men can get a discharge, including that clumpy nasty white stuff. also, the head of the penis may turn reddish or get little blistery things.

- i haven't heard of it smelling like anything, but if you can smell yeast, you better bet you should get your boy some treatment.

according to the emails i get, the symptoms can be perilously close to those of genital herpes: little red itchy bumps are not uncommon with penile yeast infections. if you aren't absolutely certain, go see a doctor for testing and diagnosis.

Signs and symptoms of a male yeast infection include a reddish rash, itching or burning at the tip of the penis. Fortunately, most male yeast infections are easily treated with an over-the-counter antifungal treatment, such as Monistat (yes, men can use it too). Apply the medication directly to the affected skin twice daily for a week. If the rash doesn't go away, or if it recurs frequently, consult your doctor.
