Psychologst saying don't do yoga?

My mother in law's psychiatrist told her not to do yoga since it is a religion. I think this is way out of line. I am not that well educated on psychiatry though so I could be wrong. Opinions?

Wow!

The only time I have heard someone being told not to do yoga is because they had a lower spinal problem.
Anyway, yoga is not a religion, it is exercise.

I apologize Dr Bob if I offended you. I have now deleted my inaccuracy.
I still, personally, don't think a therapist should put their judgment onto a person like that though - especially when the reason is inaccurate.

I think it depends on how you treat Yoga. I use it as a way to gain flexibility because I also do Tae Kwon Do.

i thought if it has anything to do with health.phew~

You're right that is out of line. If it's not threatening her mental or physical health there should be nothing wrong with her doing yoga. Tell her to switch psychiatrist, quick, there's no telling what kind of other bogus things they are telling her.

This woman is an idiot and a very poor and manipulative psychiatrist. Yoga is not a religion.

Yoga is not a religion. It is used by buddhists to relax their mind and for sprituality...basically meditation. It is connected to their religion but Yoga itself is not. Its not an exercise to them...for americans it is. I dont use it for exercise...to get flexible. I use it for calming my mind and to get relaxed.

MISHKIN: You are wrong about your # 2 response. There are many psychiatrists and psychologists who are expert in theology. I am one. I have five years of graduate education in theology and biblical studies, and two graduate degrees in them.

ATREEHUGGER: You said "That's giving an opinion and judgment, they can't do that - not legally anyway." I know of no place where that is true. Therapists can give all the opinions they want; thast's part of what we do, for heaven's sake! Clients are welcome to accept all, some, or none of them.

This question sure brought out the yoga people! The question, however, is not about yoga, but about the therapist's attitude about religion. As I'm sure some of you know, some therapists see religion as a form of mental illness, or at least a belief system that conflicts with positive mental health.

This shrink may have a religious bias of some kind, and wants the client to stick with the mainstream and not get involved with a religion or philosophy that would interfere with therapy.

But what I'm saying about this site is that those who respond need either to become informed before they say something, or SAY that their answers are only their personal opinions. Please, think about the accuracy of what you say before you put it out here for all to see.

they r mad

they want people to go them

he he he that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my entire life

1. yoga is an exercise technique it is not a religion

2. a phsychatrist or a phychologist has no expertise in theology (the study of religions)

3. a phsychatrist or a phychologist has no business telling a patient what to believe in or not

That in my opinion is completely rediculous. Yoga relaxes muscles and moves blood all around the body to make us healtheir. Also as far as I know, Yoga is not seen as a religion in America.
