Loud pop music during Yoga class? Why this trend?

Whenever I've gone to yoga class lately, they all feel the need to play soft pop or roch hits during practice. I don't need Nora Jones blaring while I'm trying to concentrate. Last class the teacher played it sooo loud she was literally shouting over Josh Groban!

Don't get me wrong I love loud music and afterwards I'll drive away singing Rob Zombie songs but I like my yoga peaceful, or if they use music, something instrumental and quiet.

Is it just me? I've attended different classes at different places and they almost all seem to do this, so I was wondering if other yoga-ites like it.

I hate it. : (

Thanks to the both of you! I was looking for different opinions. The music really interfers with my breathing and sense of calmness but it is popular with most.

I'll check my yoga studios. Thank you again!

Depends on the type of class.

Yeah teachers and studios are trying to put their own stamp on american yoga. Back in the olden days there was no relaxing music. So it is just the change.

there are still plenty of traditional yoga classes out there so search them out. Also tell the teacher if you don't like it.

I teach yoga, primarily to children. I do more rock type songs only during our sun salutations. We do Beatles Here Comes the Sun, etc. But for kids, it's appropriate.

Students who take my classes have varying desires and needs from their practice. Some feel an extra push with the upbeat music, jazzing up the mood and enthusiasm to continue in challenging poses. Others seem more purist and would prefer a more meditative yoga. I think it's important for you to communicate with the instructor, and seek out classes that suit you. Seasons change with yoga. At this time, you may need a quiet practice. You may want to try Bikram, as they use NO music and are VERY focused.

Good luck.
