Does Bible forbid to do Yoga ?

One of my christian friend told me that Bible says that Yoga is against the basic principles of christianity.

But he could not tell me page number or verse number

Is there really a verse in Bible against use of Yoga ?

If yes please quote page number/verse number etc.

Yoga is an integral part of Hinduism (Patanjali yoga sutra - the first scripture on yoga written more than 5000 years ago)

At some point we all have to choose to either grow up and Assume Responsibility for our own lives, or else be slaves to other people's ideas, insecurities, and ignorances for the rest of our lives.

Moses kidnapped the Children of Israel under false pretences.
Like the Poed Poper, he promised to lead them into a land flowing with milk and honey. Actually, he killed off all the adults over 20, and brainwashed all their children.

Moses was the "Eye-for-an-eye" Guy, who had no reason to forgive the Children of Israel for not receiving him as a prophet from the first, covering up his act of murder of an Egyptian citizen exercising his S & M rights. His heartfelt wish was that they suffer as he had suffered- forty years in the wilderness, tending flocks. As is invariably the case with such wishes, the wisher gets to suffer along with his victims.

A necessary first move was to order the EXECUTION of ALL OF THE RIVAL RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY EXPERTS. This was accepted with equanimity. This was NOT the Deal when they left Egypt! But Moses cooked up one Commandment after the other as an excuse for killing more and more of their Brethren.

EXODUS 22:18.

18. "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

DEUTERONOMY 18:9-14.

9. When thou art come into the Land
which the LORD thy God giveth thee,
thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10. There shall not be found among you any one
that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire,
or that useth Divination, or an Observer of Times,
or an Enchanter, or a Witch.
11. Or a Charmer, or a Consulter with Familiar Spirits,
or a Wizard, or a Necromancer.
12. For all that do these things
are an abomination unto the LORD:
and because of these abominations
The LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
13. Thou shalt be Perfect with the LORD thy God.
14. For these nations, which thou shalt possess,
hearkened unto Observers of Times, and unto Diviners:
but as for thee, the LORD thy God
hath not suffered thee so to do.

Reading a Ouija board, or laying Tarots is indeed the Root of All Evil- and those doing such things should quite rightly be executed by stoning squad- or so we are TOLD to SEE IT.

Invading other people's land, who have never done us the slightest harm, and killing them to take their ancestors' land ot from under them is Evil in ANYONE'S BOOK- if it happened to THEM- but we are told to NOT SEE this applying to Israel.

One Korah got up and declared that Moses was just getting them killed off one by one- WHICH HE WAS. Moses disproved thus allegation as baseless and bootless by killing their entire clan- thus laying the World record for the Fastest Elimination of an Unwanted Neighbour. This record stood for about 600 years, finally broken by Elijah- who took out 102 guys with two lightning bolts.... but that is not our message for today.

There are Commandments which say that anyone who has Knowledge they didn't get from The Bible, through the Religion of The Bible is automatically a Bad Guy. The people to whom this was originally written were very cool with that.

Jesus revealed that all those cheerfully condemning others to death were at the same time condemning THEMSELVES to death. This was how Moses got his revenge.

MATTHEW 7:1-6.

"JUDGE not, that ye be not judged.
2. "For with what judgment ye judge,
ye shall be judged:
and with what measure ye mete,
it shall be measured to you again.
3. "And why beholdest thou the mote
that is in thy brother's eye,
but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4. "Or how wilt thou say to thy brother,
'Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye;'
and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5. "Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam
out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly
to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
6. "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs,
neither cast ye your pearls before swine,
lest they trample them under their feet,
and turn again and rend you."

Jesus laid a trap to test his Disciples- which is not mentioned in The Bible. The whole [*Bleep!*]ing BOOK is a TRAP and a TEST to see what sort of a Human being you are.

It is GREAT FUN to CONDEMN others as ANIMALS, and LEAVE THEM TO DIE in ignorance. None of the Christian who have ever done this has EVER realized that THEY were being judged by THE SAME standard. The Angels of God will NOT help you, when you have refused to help others in the same position reliative to YOU as you are to the Angels.

MATTHEW 23:1-4.

THEN spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his Disciples,
2. Saying,
"The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3. "All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe,
that observe and do; but do not ye after their works:
for they say, and do not.
4. "For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne,
and lay them on men's shoulders;
but they themselves will not move them
with one of their fingers."

I lost interest in Dr. Rebecca [HE CAME TO SET THE CAPTIVES FREE] Brown, after she said that the finger-gestures and poses in martial arts were to summon devils.
I studied martial arts for about five years- never got beyond white belt in Taekwon-Do, due to poor quality training. gave up because of a serious crippling injury (someone trod on my bug toe. No, seriously. This was a crippling condition. It wan't funny-stop laughing.) I amassed a large quantity of knowledge (I read several issues of OK KARATE- will you please stop that confounded tittering over there?)

Seriously- Rebecca Brown says that a devil can get into me, because I bent my body in a particular way. AT WHAT POINT DID SATAN GET A PATENT ON OUR BODY-POSITIONS?

I grew up in complete ignorance of my people's traditions and beliefs, because my parents wanted to have the option of sacrificing me to a juju devil god, should they take me to Nigeria.
This plan went severaly South, and my mother wound up dead instead of me. I did not learn what went down for some sixteen years, when my father confessed, and told me should I ever return to the hometown again, I would be murdered

That is when I began studying all I could find out abot the spiritual, and F*CK "Abomination unto The LORD thy God" crap!
People were getting killed, I was threatened. One step sister and step brother my age were dead for sure in suspicious circumstances- my own sister was apparently dead (she wasn't but had been told to make it appear that she was, to affect me, and she obeyed orders.)

I read three books by L. Ron Hubbard, and two books by Carlos Castaneda, and understood EVERYTHING important about EVERY religious system in the World in a matter of a few months, that I didn't already know. It took me eleven years more, however, to get to the rest of Carlos Castaneda's twelve books.

There are millions of ignorant bigots who would be VERY HAPPY should I have DIED without knowing The Truth about my parent's people and their beliefs. They do NOTHING to help people like me and my dead step brother and sister by my father's first two wives (whom he was still married to, and who never learned English- let alone went to England. It was forbidden by father to learn the Yoruba language- ostensibly so that I not corrupt my perfect English, but really, lest I overhear some phrase or idiom that wold reveal my true status among "my people." Can you imagine what that was like- to finally learn the truth?)

Anybody could have told me the facts. TOur town and our family is full of Born Again Pentecostal Christians. Several of whom I counted as friends. All of it was a lie. Designed specifically to kill ME.

So you understand if I am not overly enthusiastic about upholding sacred Jewish Traditions, and abiding by their foolish theories. My advice is that you do not let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do with YOUR mind, nor with YOUR own body. I could do all the Hatha Yoga positions in Richard Hittleman's book. They were a great help, but L. Ron Hubbard shows what they are missing in the Eastern contemplative religions.

You can do whatever you like, but EVERYTHING carries its own dangers with it. Dr. Carlos Castaneda alone revealed what it is that lets people get devil-possessed and vegetated in the mind-improvement religions that go horribly wrong.

The Devils cannot get to you while you are doing your mental discipline thingie. They don't WANT to get to you- your energy taste HORRIBLE to them.

LUKE 11:21-26.

21. "When a strong man armed keepeth his palace,
his goods are in peace:
22. "But when a stronger than he shall come upon him,
and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour
wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
23. "He that is not with me is against me:
and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.
24."hen the unclean spirit is gone out of a man,
he walketh through dry places, seeking rest;
and finding none, he saith,
'I will return unto my house whence I came out.'
25. "And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
26. "Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits
more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there:
and the last state of that man is worse than the first."

The mind of the Sunner is the Devils' Palace.
Once you adopt any disciplined behavior against his will, you have kicked his butt and evicted Satan from your mind.
The Life Force begins to build up in your soul, and you feel relief from all of your endeavors and sufferings. Of you relax your Discipline, the Devils come back and remove ALL your life Force that is not nailed down. Including your self-awareness.

This can reduce you to a vegetative state.

The word "yoga" means "union," and the goal is to unite one's transitory (temporary) self with the infinite Brahman, the Hindu concept of "God." This "God" is not a literal being, but is an impersonal spiritual substance that is one with nature and the cosmos. This view is called "pantheism," the belief that everything is God, and that reality consists only of the universe and nature. Because everything is God, the yoga philosophy makes no distinction between man and God.

Hatha yoga is the aspect of yoga which focuses on the physical body through special postures, breathing exercises, and concentration or meditation. It is a means to prepare the body for the spiritual exercises, with less obstacles, in order to achieve enlightenment. The practice of yoga is based on the belief that man and God are one. It is little more than self-worship disguised as a high level of spirituality.

The question becomes, is it possible for a Christian to isolate the physical aspects of yoga as simply a method of exercise, without incorporating the spirituality or philosophy behind it? I don't believe so. Yoga originated with a blatantly anti-Christian philosophy, and that philosophy has not changed. It teaches one to focus on oneself instead of on the one true God. It encourages its participants to seek the answers to life's difficult questions within their own conscience instead of in the Word of God. It also leaves one open to deception from God's enemy, who searches for victims that he can turn away from God (1 Peter 5:8).

Whatever we do should be done for God's glory (1 Corinthians 10:31), and we would be wise to heed the words of the apostle Paul: "Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise" (Philippians 4:8, NLT).

No ,the bible does not say anything about yoga.Yoga is a way of life and its paths are many the idea is well being and ethical life .
Hata Yoga or the one more popularly connected with the word to people who do not know is actually the lowest form of youga -it is actually the preliminary to quieting the body with the aim of attaining a quiescent mind, people who are evolved need not indulge in this they can go in for meditation and get the same results. There is Tantra Yoga Mantra Yoga,Hamsa Yoga, Gnyana Yoga (or the yoga of wisdom),Karma Yoga, as also Sahaja Yoga as also Nada yoga,Laya Yoga. Accomplished practitioners are very rare ,the yoga of wisdom and the yoga of action are considered to be the best but also the most difficult.

Most of all Remember as Marquis De Sade said at his trial in defence of himself - "Man condemns what he does not Understand "

If you read the other answers you will see a pattern - for some Christians the rules are exclusive - if the Bible doesn't support it then you can't do it, especially if it has the slightest connection with anything even slightly religious. Yoga is one of those things that exists in more than one form - some of which have only to do with relaxing the body, others deep religious contemplation. Christianity is not a religion that encourages relaxation or rest.

Aw aw ...the Bible is a manipulated text ...it has a long history of manipulation by the kings and Church... mentions lot of false and ' un Christian' or rather things that are always opposed to true spirituality... dont know when Christians will educate themselves and stop being fundamental and foolish

besides many verses preaching in the bible are quiet symbolic- and there are numerous subtle references to enlightment, the third eye, liberation, universal love etc but since they are subtly told ( as in our Geeta- infact even more subtly told ) and the lone Christian scripture have no backing of commentaries by saints or other spiritual literature . plus the Church did things to misguide people rather than explain them -- so all this made Bible somewhat a cause of hampering the spiritual growth of the ordinary and 'not so wise and spiritual' Christians

i am religious and i've taken a few classes on my course about complimentary therapies, yoga being one of them we had this discussion in class. i had never heard of people thinking this way before until the lecturer said it. it has nothing to do with religion. when these complimentary therapies mention about spirituality they mean your personal wellbeing not your religion.

Yogas were 'the olden exercises', in India, carrying-out for our body, heart and brain, in the olden times; even now, in India and other states, we are carrying-out 'Yoga and Pranayam' to keep the body, heart and brain; HEALTHY. I believe, it belonged to every-body to human-beings, birds and animals; it is not related to any religion. Please see the exercises by animals, birds, crawling insects and the human children; BUT THE HUMAN, CHILDREN AND 'EDUCATED MEN AND WOMEN', THEY UNDERSTAND IT. REMEMBER THE 'GOD', ONLY; ANY 'NAME'; FINALLY ' HE' ACCEPTS 'THEM'. PLEASE EXCUSE ME; I REGARD IN ALL, DIFFERENET RELIGIONS. I was suffering from paralysysis, right side including the brain; 85% healed by these 'exercise', my body right leg, arm and brain; please see the history of me, during last three years..

Yoga is one of the healthiest forms of exercise ever! I love it. I have a brother that is a Baptist pastor that completely came undone when he learned I was doing yoga. he warned me the way your friend warned you. He said it is like practicing death or something like that.
As far as I am concerned I have a bad back and the stretches work wonders. I also know there are at least ten commandments and one of those are broken daily by most of us. I figure God knows what's in my heart and watches how I treat others and respect life... I doubt He will keep me from heaven for my yoga... although He might for other things I have done.

No. The principles behind yoga are perfectly compatible with Christianity. A lot of practitioners are Buddhist, and that may scare your friend, but the discipline itself is non-faith-specific.

i never had any respect for barbaric scriptures like bible...sex with daughter in law, with daughters, with own father...
violent god which demands human blood, dad who willing to sacrifice son for "god"(satan more likely)....
i honestly think those who beleive in yoga should refrain from touching unholy stuff like bible

Yoga is a part of the Buddhist religion however what your friend fails so realize is that you can pray to any God you wish and still be a Buddhist because Buddha (aside from some sects in Japan) is not a God. A "Buddha" is an enlightened one.

When did the Bible ever stop us from exercising and having sports....???
Disco , line dancing, Shooting animals for sports ..that's killing
How about killing whales and seals...??
To my best knowledge....any healthy activities is fine when we starts a put a price to it by betting or gaming you see how ugly it turn out to be....!!!

This is one of those questions like 'Does the bible forbid sushi' that shows more about the asker's lack of knowledge about cultures and their interactions thousands of years ago, than it ever shows about religion.

well if you let someone else tell you these things you will find the the Bible forbids living . It wants you to hate your parents but obey your master. Slavery is good Yoga is bad sorta make you emmmmmm doesnt it

Yes dont do yoga, it gives you all sorts of dirty ideas. Then again next time your with your woman (or man) you could surprise her with 'the tree', no one says no to a little wood.

Yoga is important in Tantric Buddhism, so maybe that's where he's getting confused?

No there isn't anything about doing yoga in the bible.

Not that I know of. Maybe he's just saying that because Yoga originated in a country with a whole other religion.

I think yoga is good exercise

No.

Yoga is not mentioned by name in the Bible, however your friend was right about it being against the basic principles of Christianity.

Yoga is an ancient path to spiritual growth, and originates out of India where Induism is practiced. The practice and goal of yoga dates back to the Upanishads, written between 1000-5000 BC.

History of Yoga 鈥?Is it spiritual?
The history of yoga is based in the Indus Valley civilization. The techniques are practiced by the Indus to initiate spiritual growth. The yogis encourage union with the finite jiva (transitory self) and with the infinite Brahman (eternal self). Brahman is a term used by the Hindus to mean 鈥淕od.鈥?So, what are we supposed to unite with? Yogis usually think of God as an impersonal, spiritual substance, coexisting with all of reality. This doctrine is called pantheism which is the view that everything is God. In the Bible, God reveals Himself as the personal Creator of the universe.

Since it is taught by the yogis that everything is God, it then stands to reason, man is God. Christianity, on the other hand, teaches us there is a clear distinction between man and God. Since God is the Creator, we are one of his creations and created 鈥渋n the image鈥?of God.

Unlike the yogis, the Bible presents man鈥檚 primary problem to be sin -- a failure to conform to God鈥檚 character and standards. The solution is Jesus Christ鈥檚 death on the cross. He calls men to freely receive all the benefits of His salvation through faith in Christ alone.

Yoga views man鈥檚 problem primarily in terms of ignorance. Man simply does not understand he is God so the solution is enlightenment, or an experience of union with God. In order to reach that goal, there must be a lot of striving and effort which is not needed in the Christian viewpoint.

History of Yoga - Is yoga safe?
Can the methods used in the yoga techniques for exercising be separated from the philosophy? The answer is a distinctive 鈥渘o鈥?because yoga is considered to be a practice of psychosomatic exercises. There is no way to separate the two. The yoga scholar will tell you that in order to practice yoga in the fullest, one must experience what is called the 鈥渒undalini鈥?effect within meditation. What does this mean? For spiritual lessons to be grasped by the soul within the person, the chakra, or different locations within the body where a circle of metaphysical and/or biophysical energy resides, join together in the process. Kundilini stimulates the chakra center to open and release the energy held within. If not done properly, some believe that a person can injure the brain.

By researching the history of yoga, we learn that it is not safe spiritually. Yoga teaches us to focus on ourselves instead of on the one true God. It encourages us to seek the answers to life's difficult questions within our own conscience instead of in the Bible. It also leaves one open to deception from Satan, who searches for victims that he can turn away from God (1 Peter 5:8).

This article may help: "Yoga - Just an exercise or something more?"

The objective of yoga as a discipline is to lead a person to the spiritual experience of being 鈥測oked鈥?to or merged with a superhuman spirit. But which spirit would that be?

In Hindu World, author Benjamin Walker says of yoga: 鈥淚t may have been an early system of magical ritualism, and yoga still retains in its meaning an overtone of occultism and sorcery.鈥?Hindu philosophers admit that the practice of yoga can give supernatural powers, even though they usually claim that this is not the ultimate goal of yoga. For example, in the book Indian Philosophy, former president of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, says of the yogi that 鈥渃ontrol of the body through postures results in an indifference to the extremes of heat and cold. . . . The yogin can see and hear at a distance . . . Transmission of thought from one individual to another without the intervention of the normal communicating mechanisms is quite possible. . . . The yogi can make his body invisible.鈥?br>
The image of a yogi sleeping on a bed of nails or walking on hot coals may appear to be a hoax to some and a joke to others. But these are common occurrences in India, as is the practice of standing on one leg while staring directly at the sun for hours and breath control that allows a person to be buried in sand for long periods of time. In June 1995, The Times of India reported that a three-and-a-half-year-old girl lay in a trance as a car weighing more than 1,600 pounds [750 kg] was allowed to run over her abdomen. To the amazement of the crowd, when she awoke she was totally unharmed. The report added: 鈥淚t was sheer yogic power.鈥?br>
Without a doubt, no normal human is capable of performing any of these tasks. Hence, a Christian must ask: Of what are these feats an indication? Are they from Jehovah God, 鈥渢he Most High over all the earth,鈥?or are they from some other source? (Psalm 83:18) The Bible is clear on this point. When the Israelites were on the verge of entering the Promised Land, which was occupied by the Canaanites, Jehovah told the sons of Israel through Moses: 鈥淵ou must not learn to do according to the detestable things of those nations.鈥?What 鈥渄etestable things鈥? Moses warned against 鈥渁nyone who employs divination, a practicer of magic or anyone who looks for omens or a sorcerer.鈥?(Deuteronomy 18:9, 10) These things are detestable to God because they are works of the demons and of the fallen flesh.鈥擥alatians 5:19-21.

The choice of what physical exercise to pursue is a personal one. Christians, however, would not allow anything鈥攂e it bodily training, eating, drinking, clothing, entertainment, or something else鈥攖o mar their relationship with Jehovah God. (1 Corinthians 10:31) For those exercising simply for the sake of their health, there are many avenues available that do not involve exposure to the dangers of spiritism and occultism. By keeping clear of practices and beliefs that are rooted in false religion, we may look forward to God鈥檚 blessing of a righteous new system of things in which we can enjoy perfect health in body and mind for an eternity.鈥? Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:3, 4.

Hope this helps :)

Actually, Yes. If you fully understand what Yoga is.... a part of a pagan religious ritual.... then yes, we are not to follow other religions, or their practices.
