Can i do yoga and pilates if though i have a fused spine? |
i had the rods takin out my back 2 years ago but am quite worried because my back is curving again and theres nothing they can do. ive heard that exercise can help. is it ok to do if the spine is fused. Yes you can do some easy ASANS slowly under the guidance of a good teacher and no problem at all for Pranayam or Meditation. Absolutely yes. Yoga will strengthen the muscles and help to hold the spine in place, as well as encouraging any healing you may need, as the breathing and posture holding in yoga helps to distribute the flow of oxygen and prana, "life force", throughout the body. Exercise and gentle stretching are Okay with back fusion, but take your time. I too have rods in my lower back...and use a large yoga ball to stretch daily. The simple answer is yes but I would suggest that you get a referral to physical therapy. This way they can evaluate and see what deficits are present and design a program to help stabilize the areas that are weakened. You could also do a pool exercise program. The one thing that can be said is not to wait on this. The condition can deteriorate and helping to strengthen the muscles will help you considerably. Yoga and Pilate's are safe to do as long as you stay within yourself and don't try to compete with anyone else. Again a referral to a physical therapist would help you significantly. |
