Is this normal for beginners taking Yoga, dance or aerobics classes? PLEASE ANSWER!?


I'm going to take a yoga class at my gym tomorrow morning. I'm a beginner. In my belly dance and pole dance classes, I always have problems when it comes to putting my body in certain positions and stretching. I have problems doing push ups too. Why? I literally feel like I am about to die!! And I'm not fat, either.

Now, I have had an unhealthy lifestyle for years. Old terrible habits don't fade so easily but I'm trying to slowly get myself on track. I don't know if that's the problem or could it be that I'm not used to this? Or it might be that I have no strength? What can I do about this so I can be more flexible with bending and stretching where it doesn't cause pain? I am carrying 30 extra pounds but I see "big women" and older people doing some of this stuff better than I can. What should I do?

I do fine with the routines and all. I just can't stretch too much.

you are just out of shape. i felt the same when i started yoga. just do enough that gets a work out but doesnt cause pain. if you have a lot of pain your over doing it..its just takes time. it doesnt matter how big you are or old, if you dont have muscle build up you will be weaker. i would stretch a bit before yoga, like you would for any sport or exercise and keep it up, soon that im gonna die feeling will go away and you will get more energy, strength...

You sound like you are putting in way too many fitness classes in at once. Not being able to stretch to certain positions is not from being fat, it's from not being in shape. Start slowly. Slower than you think you need to. Work very gradually and don't push yourself. That can mean an injury and you won't be able to participate in any of the classes.
Those big women and old people are in better shape than you. they are just heavier and older.
One of the most invigorating aerobics classes I ever took was taught by a 68 year old grandmother. She looked like a little grey haired granny but even those 20 something buff guys were wheezing for dear life at the end of her class.
