What is the difference between meditation and yoga? |
What is the difference between meditation and yoga? As defined by the sage Patanjali, Yoga is 鈥楥hitta Vriti Nirodhah鈥? promoting the unison of body and mind and envisages wellness of human beings both physical, mental and spiritual. The eight steps of yoga are yama, niyama, aasana, pranayama, pratyahar, dhyana, dharana and samadhi. Yoga is also said to be a way of life and when practised gives all-round benefits. Meditation is a part of yoga, which deals with mental relaxation and concentration. Here, attention is focused on thoughts and breath. Being aware of breathing automatically controls the thought process and thus relaxes mind completely. Source(s): newspaper i think they are the same u meditate u don't move..u do yoga...u do certain moves :) Yoga is a philosophy that uses meditation techniques among others. hope this helps, have a nice day ;-) many big differences but the most fundamental is the fact that yoga is predominately an exercise to strengthen the physiology and meditation primarily strengthens the mind/intellect Yoga is a journey of 8 stages. These stages are Yama - moral codes, Niyama - self-purification and study, Asana - posture, Pranayama - breath control, Pratyahara - sense control, Dharana - concentration, Dhyana - meditation, Samadhi - contemplation. Therefore, meditation is a stage of Yoga, called "Dhyana". For more details pick up a good book on "Patanjali Yoga Sutra". |
