Arthritis. Is there any natural medicine or yoga for it...?

I am a 44 years old, very athletic who's been exercising my whole life, I do not eat red meat, just chicken, fish, nuts, fruits and lots of vegetables, don't drink soda at all, I drink red wine and I'm diagnosed with ARTHRITIS. I wonder if weather conditions and living in cities like New York can have a significant impact.
Is it the environment, air, water and stress that have something to do with it besides genetic and inheritance.
My doctor says THERE IS NO CURE FOR IT "JUST LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT..."

I know how frustrating it is... I started having joint pain in my knees and hips when I was 16 or 17 and had to "just live with it" for years. I went through a bunch of exams (blood work, xrays, rheumatologist) about three years ago (after I got a new doctor) and never managed to get a firm diagnosis. My problem is probably not arthritis (which is what my first doctor had told me), but no one seems sure what it is. That was when I started yoga, 'cause I felt like I had to do something.

Yoga has made a huge difference for me. It's helped me protect my joints by learning good alignment-- something I never thought that much about before. It's also helped me to build strength in specific muscle groups that help to support my knees especially-- so the knees take less stress.

It is important to look for a teacher that will take the time to work with you in class. Some yoga teachers talk you through a routine as if it was an aerobics class and never give you any instruction on how to do a pose properly or come help you make adjustments. Teachers that describe their classes as classical, hatha, Iyengar, or gentle would be a good place to start. Be sure to tell any teacher you have not had a class with before about what your specific issues are and they will help you modify poses as necessary during class, as well as helping you learn what is good or bad for that problem.

Other things I've learned, many of which I'm sure you know....

Avoid high impact exercises, particularly those that will affect the problem joints.

There are two different kinds of arthritis. Try to become educated on which form you have as that will help you manage it. There are important differences between rheumatoid and osteo arthritis. WebMD is a good place to start learning about it.

Try to keep a log of the level of discomfort you have from day to day (none, severe, whatever) and also note what you did that day, how you felt otherwise, how much sleep you got, and what the weather was like. I've learned that my joints hurt more when I'm tired and other things like that just by paying attention this way. It really helps with managing the discomfort if you can know exactly what the triggers are.

You can try glucosamine chondroitin. I've never heard that it will do any harm, but I think they're still trying to figure out whether or not it actually helps. The theory is that it's supposed to help sustain (and possibly rebuild) important connective tissue in your joints.

I found ibuprofen to be the most helpful over the counter pain killer for my joint pain.

Most importantly, don't let this condition rule you. I let that happen for a long time and it was a big mistake. There are ways to deal with it if you can just be patient and disciplined about figuring it out. If your arthritis becomes advanced enough that you can't control the discomfort with ibuprofen your doctor will help you find a prescription medication that will work.

You may also want to consider looking for another doctor-- one who doesn't think that arthritis is just a fact of life or that you can't do anything about it. As with any medical issue, a doctor who really believes that you can do something to prevent it from getting worse (or cure it) is more likely to be helpful.

Good luck!
