Why is it that women on there periods shouldn't do inverted poses in yoga? And what are inverted poses? "Inverted Poses One often thinks that in inverted poses, the body is entirely (or almost entirely) upside down. sarvangasana and sirshasana (shoulderstand and headstand) are two of the most familiar inversions. In fact, they are often called the queen and king of the asanas, respectively鈥攁nd rightly so, for they exert a very powerful influence on the body, mind, energy and consciousness. However, inverted poses (a.k.a. inversions) also come in many other shapes, so let's make a more careful definition: an inverted pose is one in which the head is lower than the heart. For example, sasamgasana, matsyasana, padahastasana, and even balasana fit this definition, so they too are inverted poses. This definition also reminds us that inversions are contraindicated for those suffering from cardiovascular problems: blood pressure in the brain could rise too much, or the heart could be dangerously stressed."
