Can practicing yoga (meditation) help deepen your Christianity? |
Can practicing yoga systematically help you become more Christ-like? I took up the practice of yoga for excercize about a year and a half ago. I don't particularly practice meditation if you mean seated meditation. Nevertheless, the asana practice alone has so cleared my mind that my prayer has improved dramatically. As a Christian mystic, when I say prayer, I refer specifically to silent communion with God. Am I more Christ-like? A little. It would be hard to say whether that was due becoming more clear so that whatever goodness I have comes to the surface more easily, or because my connection with God has become stronger and the goodness comes from there. I will not be surprized if there is a Christian yoga movement in the near future, since yoga develops spirituality (a weakness of most denominations) but many Christians seem to fear anything their own church doesn't sponsor. it depends on what you are meditating on. I don't know about making you more Christ-like, but it will help you become a better person all in all if yah do it right I have no idea. But I recommend it. It's excellent exercise. Really relaxing. Oh for goodness sake!! Decide which religion you're going for and stick to it, please. Yoga is an ancient eastern spiritualist discipline and no, God does not want you to do it!! Honestly. What do they teach them at these schools... EDIT: Never said yoga was a religion, sweetie. You're right on that one, at least - it isn't. But the religion of christianity certainly doesn't include it! And Jesus meditated, yes, if you mean "thought deeply". But he didn't do yoga!! I'd be in creases laughing if I wasn't so concerned that you even asked this question. OK, here we go. Meditation: calm, deep, prayerful thought. Beware anything that says "transcendental" or suggests you focus on a word. Back away VERY quickly. EDIT: OK, since this seems such a big hurdle for you. You're going to have to substitute the biblical words "meditate on" for "think about" to get the right idea. Yes, synonymously. The focus word I was thinking of is used in transcental meditation. If you were ever to try this, you would be given a word (which you won't understand!) and told to focus on it and nothing but it. Please don't deliberately misunderstand people - it is a very poor way to argue. You must know as well as I do that the disciples were given the Lord's Prayer to USE. No it doesnt. Praying, reading your bible, Fasting and praying, they deepen your Christianity. They deepen your closeness to God. If you wana be more Christ-like then as you pray God changes your heart and gives you power to overcome your weakness, thereby making you more Christ-like. Yoga doesnt give you any power. It gives you the feeling that you feel more peaceful, but you'll pretty soon fall into the same trap and lose all your peace sooner or later. I am surprised that you would even ask that. Yoga is a form of "self-help" where people think that if they go into a deep "trance" they can cure their stresses, aches and pains and worries. Whatever. They fail to see that they are trying to become "god-like" and cure themselves. We cannot save ourselves, only Jesus can. Jesus prayed to the Father, he did not "meditate" per say. And in case you are not familiar with the English language, meditate can also mean to think or ponder on something. |
